How to Change – Reset Windows 10 Password if Forgotten?

Have you forgotten your computer password? Often this is no reason to panic! We show you what you can do in such a case.

If you have secured your Windows PC with a password, this is a good thing to do in the first instance. Your personal data is protected with little effort. But what happens if you can’t remember your password? We show you how to proceed in an emergency.

How to Change – Reset Windows 10 Password?

  • Microsoft Account – Forgot your password
  • New password via the administrator
  • Last possibility: New installation
  • Further possibilities

Microsoft Account – Forgot Password
You are lucky if you have a Microsoft account on your computer. Then you can easily access this Microsoft password recovery site from another device. There you can contact Microsoft to set a new password.

New password through the administrator
If you have not created your user account via a Microsoft account, it is stored locally on your PC. In this case the password request is a bit more difficult. If you have a local account, you cannot select the “Forgot password” function. If you did, anyone could request a new password and thus access your data.
You should always have an administrator account on your PC. This can access the other user accounts in an emergency. If an administrator account already exists and you know its password,

it is now easy:
Log on to your PC with the administrator account.
Press the key combination [Windows] + [R] to open the Run window.
Enter “control userpasswords2” there.
Click on the user of your choice. He must be assigned to the “Users” group. Then click “Reset password…” below to set a new password. This article explains how to find a particularly secure password.
Confirm the entry of the new password with “OK”. Now you can log in with your other account with the new password.

Last possibility: New installation
If you neither log on to your PC via your Microsoft account nor have administrator access, in case of a forgotten password you will unfortunately only be left with the complete data deletion.

Attention! As the name implies, all data will be deleted from your computer. This data can also not be easily restored. To prevent such a case, you should regularly back up Windows backups to an external hard drive.

This is how you proceed in case of a complete deletion:
Start your PC. Then click on the On / Off icon at the bottom right of the lock screen.
Press “Restart” while holding down the [Shift] key.
You can now click on “Troubleshooting” in the start options. Then select “Reset this PC” and “Remove All”. You can then restart your PC.

Further possibilities
All other possibilities to get the Windows password after all are in a legal grey area. Hacking tools would have to be used. These include a password cracker or a registry editor, for example. The password cracker is used to find out the password. The registry editor edits the sensitive data of the computer so that no password entry is necessary. These methods are actually only used in an absolute emergency.
This software is not legal in itself because it is considered a hacking tool. However, if you use them for your own account, their use is allowed.
As described above, a regular backup is the best option. This way the PC can be rebuilt in case of an emergency. Then the data can simply be taken over from the backup hard disk.
